Staffordshire medicine reminder initiative

Over a third of older people take more than four medicines, several times daily and at different times of the day, according to Head of Medicines at South Western Staffordshire PCT, Cathy Riley, “Research has shown that for patients with long term conditions, as many as half of prescribed medicines are not taken as prescribed.”

In the US, where people turn instinctively, and by force of circumstance, to the private sector for support services, alarms are sold into the ‘concerned sons and daughters’ market. International Heart Trial

An implant to monitor left atrial pressure. Readings are communicated with a handheld computer called a ‘patient advisory module’. The information allows real time adjustment and dosing of medication similar to the way that diabetics adjust insulin dosage in response to home glucose monitoring. Left atrial pressure is a key measurement for predicting acute worsening of heart failure that leads to lung congestion and the need for urgent hospitalisation. Biosign Technologies Inc. has developed a web-based digital instrument that generates and stores a variety of vital signs from a single reading of arterial pulse. Even though Toronto-based Biosign hasn’t sold a single device yet — it has an inventory of 1,000 units — Mr. Potts is aiming to put one in every home within five years. “You can think of this as a cellphone.
