An implant to monitor left atrial pressure. Readings are communicated with a handheld computer called a ‘patient advisory module’. The information allows real time adjustment and dosing of medication similar to the way that diabetics adjust insulin dosage in response to home glucose monitoring. Left atrial pressure is a key measurement for predicting acute worsening of heart failure that leads to lung congestion and the need for urgent hospitalisation. Fragmented sleep a precursor to falls
Sunday, June 12th, 2005From Canada, Tactex Controls Inc., the developers of the fibre optic-based pressure sensor, Kinotex, has completed a research pilot project using its “under the mattress” bed occupancy sensor to monitor the quality of sleep of residents with dementia. Says Rob Inkster, CEO, “What we found in this pilot study is that disturbed or fragmented sleep is a precursor to stumbles and falls”. Read more.
